Notre-Dame Paris Highlights

The Towers

Notre-Dame’s iconic twin towers rise nearly 70 meters above Île de la Cité, shaping one of Paris’s most famous silhouettes. Historically home to the cathedral’s massive bells, including the Emmanuel Bell, they have long symbolized strength and pride. Today, the towers continue to fascinate visitors with their history and breathtaking views of the city.

The Rose Windows

Notre-Dame’s Rose Windows are among the most treasured stained-glass masterpieces in the world. Dating back to the 13th century, these circular windows glow with intricate biblical scenes and symbolic imagery. When sunlight streams through, the interior fills with dazzling colors, offering visitors a moving experience that combines faith, art, and timeless medieval craftsmanship.

The Façade & Gargoyles

The cathedral’s western façade is one of the finest examples of French Gothic art, adorned with rows of kings, saints, and detailed portals. High above, the Notre-Dame gargoyles watch over Paris — part rainspouts, part mythical guardians. Their intricate forms add mystery and symbolism, capturing both the imagination and the spirit of medieval craftsmanship.

Relics and Spiritual Treasures

For centuries, Notre-Dame safeguarded some of Christianity’s most sacred relics, including the Crown of Thorns, a fragment of the True Cross, and a Holy Nail. Though temporarily relocated after the 2019 fire, their deep association with the cathedral underscores its spiritual importance, drawing pilgrims and visitors from around the globe to honor its legacy.

Literary and Cultural Legacy

Notre-Dame’s influence extends beyond religion and architecture, thanks to Victor Hugo’s 1831 novel The Hunchback of Notre-Dame. His work revived appreciation for the cathedral and inspired its restoration in the 19th century. Since then, it has become a cultural icon, celebrated in literature, film, and art, symbolizing Paris for audiences worldwide.

Notre-Dame Architecture

Notre-Dame is celebrated as one of the greatest achievements of French Gothic architecture. Built between the 12th and 14th centuries, it introduced innovations such as flying buttresses, which allowed higher walls and expansive stained-glass windows.

The cathedral’s towers, ribbed vaults, and intricate sculptures highlight medieval artistry, while the Rose Windows remain a breathtaking centerpiece. Its design blends spiritual symbolism with engineering brilliance, creating a harmony of light, height, and detail that continues to inspire visitors and architects worldwide.

Do I Need a Guided Tour for Visiting Notre-Dame Cathedral?

Entry to Notre-Dame Cathedral remains free, and since its full reopening in December 2024, all main areas — including the nave, side chapels, treasury, towers, and the Archaeological Crypt — are open to the public. While minor restoration work continues in restricted or non-public zones, it does not affect visitors.

The towers and crypt require separate tickets, but everything else can be freely explored. Though a self-guided visit is possible, guided tours are definitely recommended for those wishing to learn about Notre-Dame’s history, symbolism, and post-fire restoration in greater depth.

The Notre-Dame Fire & Rebirth

On April 15, 2019, a catastrophic fire swept through Notre-Dame Cathedral, destroying its roof, spire, and parts of the wooden framework known as the “forest.” The world watched in shock as flames threatened one of Paris’s most beloved landmarks.

For over five years, dedicated craftsmen, architects, and specialists worked tirelessly to restore the cathedral to its former glory. Thanks to this international effort, Notre-Dame reopened its doors on December 7, 2024, marked by ceremonies that celebrated resilience and hope.

Today, all main areas of the cathedral are open to visitors, including the nave, chapels, treasury, and the towers, which reopened in September 2025. While some minor restoration continues in non-public areas, visitors can once again experience the cathedral’s full splendor — from its Gothic architecture to its soaring views over Paris.
