Types of Mass at Notre-Dame Cathedral
Notre-Dame Cathedral offers a full program of daily and Sunday Masses, open to everyone and requiring no reservation. Each service maintains centuries-old traditions while welcoming visitors and worshippers from around the world to share moments of faith and reflection.
Daily and Angelus Mass
Held on weekdays and Saturdays, these services include the recitation of the Angelus prayer followed by Mass, morning and noon. They provide peaceful opportunities for daily worship in one of Paris’s most sacred spaces.
Saturday Evening (Anticipated) Mass
Celebrated at 6:00 PM, this Mass follows the Sunday liturgy and allows those who cannot attend the next day to participate in the same readings and prayers.
Sunday Masses
Several Masses are celebrated every Sunday, beginning early in the morning and continuing through the evening. Each has its own character — from quiet reflection to the grandeur of the Gregorian Mass and the Diocesan Mass.
Gregorian Mass
Held at 10:00 AM every Sunday, this liturgy features traditional Gregorian chant, performed by the cathedral choir. It is one of the most atmospheric and historically rooted services at Notre-Dame.
Diocesan Mass
At 6:00 PM on Sundays, clergy from the Archdiocese of Paris preside over this evening Mass, bringing together parishioners and visitors for a solemn conclusion to the day.
Feast and Holiday Masses
On major Catholic feast days such as Christmas, Easter, and the Assumption of Mary, Notre-Dame holds extended liturgies featuring sacred music, processions, and candlelight ceremonies — marking the most celebrated moments of the liturgical year.
How to Attend Mass at Notre-Dame Cathedral
Everyone is welcome to take part in Mass at Notre-Dame, whether for prayer, reflection, or cultural interest. Services are free and open to the public, with a separate entrance for worshippers.
The Mass line forms about 20–30 minutes before each service opposite the Last Judgement portal, ensuring smooth access for attendees.
Dress Code & Etiquette
As an active place of worship, Notre Dame requires modest and respectful clothing:
Mass and the Cathedral’s Music Tradition
Music elevates every Mass at Notre-Dame, turning prayer into an experience that engages both the heart and the senses. Below are the most remarkable elements of this musical heritage.
The Grand Organ
With nearly 8,000 pipes, the Grand Organ is the soul of Notre-Dame’s music. Its powerful tones accompany many services, especially Sunday and feast-day Masses, filling the nave with a rich, resonant sound that has inspired worshippers for centuries.
The Cathedral Choir
The Notre-Dame Choir School performs regularly during Gregorian and solemn Masses, continuing one of Europe’s oldest liturgical music traditions. Their voices, combined with the organ’s grandeur, create a deeply moving atmosphere that transcends language.
Gregorian Chants
Every Sunday at 10:00 AM, the Gregorian Mass brings medieval chant to life. The haunting, rhythmic tones echo through the cathedral’s vaults, preserving the centuries-old connection between sacred music and worship.
Acoustic Majesty
Notre-Dame’s Gothic architecture enhances every note sung or played within its walls. The soaring ceilings and stone arches create a natural resonance, turning even a single note into an enveloping soundscape.
